Energy independence as a business decision: how Trivium Packaging Ukraine implemented resource-efficient production practices

A manufacturing company operating under conditions of full-scale war can do more than simply survive — it can build resilience, reduce costs, and transition to renewable energy sources. This is exactly what Trivium Packaging Ukraine, a resident of an industrial park in Kyiv Oblast, has demonstrated.

About the company

Trivium Packaging Ukraine is part of the international Trivium Packaging group, one of the world’s leading producers of tinplate packaging. The company specialises in the manufacture of three-piece metal cans for food products and holds a leading position in this segment of the Ukrainian market. It has implemented the international standards ISO 14001, ISO 45001, BRCGS and ISO 50001, reflecting its commitment to quality and responsible management.

The challenge: frequent outages and dependence on a generator

Since 2020, the company has been systematically working to improve its energy efficiency. Following an external energy audit and participation in UNIDO’s Energy Management Systems Expert training programme in 2022–2023, the company actively began implementing energy efficiency projects. One of these initiatives was the installation of a 248 kW grid-connected solar power plant, supported through a

UNIDO grant under the separate project “Industrial Capacity Building, Policy Advice and Diagnostics for Green Recovery in Ukraine.”

However, the full-scale war intensified the problem: prolonged and frequent power outages caused equipment shutdowns, created risks of production data loss, and made it necessary to run the diesel generator continuously. The laboratory, which houses expensive and sensitive equipment, required particular attention.

The solution: a hybrid solar power system

The support provided under the GEIPP-II Ukraine project during the implementation of earlier energy efficiency measures and solar energy initiatives was one of the factors that encouraged the company to make further investments in energy resilience and build on its successful experience with renewable energy solutions.

The main system consists of solar panels with a total capacity of 30 kW, two 12 kW inverters, and six batteries with a combined storage capacity of 30 kWh. In addition, a separate 6 kW inverter and a 5 kWh battery were installed to provide backup power for the laboratory. The total investment, including installation costs, amounted to EUR 18,680.

The solar-powered system became operational in June 2025 and has already proven its effectiveness.

Results: the numbers speak for themselves

In its first year of operation, the new system delivered the following results:

  • Annual energy savings: 23.04 MWh of electricity from renewable sources
  • CO₂  emissions reduction: 21.68 tonnes per year
  • Annual financial savings: EUR 5,420
  • Payback period: 3.43 years

As of early April 2026, the solar panels had already generated 19.2 MWh of electricity. The company is not stopping there: the next step is to expand the solar array to provide autonomous power supply for the inverter serving the company’s laboratory.

Why this matters

The Trivium Packaging Ukraine case is a clear demonstration of the core message of the GEIPP-II Ukraine project: resource efficiency and cleaner production are not a compliance cost — they are an investment with a measurable economic return. Each project of this kind brings Ukrainian enterprises closer to operating in line with European standards and strengthens their resilience during the war.

We are building a resilient economy today so that Ukraine is ready for sustainable recovery tomorrow.
