Creating an eco-industrial park takes years of work and substantial investment. That is why it is essential to establish the right planning foundation from the very beginning, ensuring that time, effort, and resources are used effectively.
This was the focus of the four-day interactive practical training by GEIPP-II Ukraine, “Planning and Design of New Eco-Industrial Parks in Ukraine”, held on 13–16 July 2026 in Lviv.
Participants included representatives of industrial park initiators and management companies, development agencies, and national organisations providing services in the planning, development and operation of industrial parks. The training aimed to strengthen practical competencies in planning and designing new, demand-driven, competitive and risk-resilient eco-industrial parks.
Over four days, participants worked through the key decisions that shape the future of a park: site selection for a new park, including analysis of preconditions and minimum assessment criteria; concept planning with regard to land use, participant interest and industrial synergies; analysis and improvement of the master plan in line with the International Framework for Eco-Industrial Parks; feasibility assessment with market demand forecasting, risk analysis and evaluation of infrastructure and investment needs; identification of project financing options; and the planning of value-added services that management companies can provide.
During the hands-on work, participants applied UNIDO tools for site selection, EIP concept planning, master plan review, access to finance and EIP service management. The work was based on the data and materials of the respective industrial parks, linking the learning approaches to each participant’s practical needs. This reflects a core idea of the project: an eco-industrial park is not a formal status but a business model that makes a park competitive and attractive to investors.
As a result of the training, participants deepened their practical skills in planning and designing new eco-industrial parks and will be able to define priority measures for site selection and assessment, improve their concept and master plans, evaluate the feasibility of projects, attract financing and develop value-added services.
